A Standout Side Garden

This Greenhithe garden presented us with a typical townhouse blueprint – a bland side entrance and a patchy back lawn. The owners were open to bold ideas and statement trees to give the space a dramatic flair.

Before:
A narrow, underwhelming side yard with tired grass and little structure. It did the job of getting you from A to B, but that was about it.

After:
We completely reimagined the space as a textural, Mediterranean-inspired garden with real character.

Large statement planters now line the side entrance wall, instantly adding rhythm and drama. These were planted with native tōtara trees, carefully selected and positioned to be trained into cloud trees over time – sculptural, architectural, and anything but ordinary.

Along the back boundary, we added privacy trees to enclose the garden and create a sense of separation from neighbouring properties. Underfoot, the patchy lawn was replaced with a fresh new lawn – soft, usable, and perfect for the dog to enjoy.

The planting palette leans heavily on texture and form, embracing that relaxed Mediterranean feel while still working beautifully in a New Zealand setting.

The result?
A once-forgettable side entrance is now a standout feature. Structured, bold, and full of intent – a garden that evolves with time and reflects owners who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
