A Contemporary Courtyard

The owners of this small courtyard garden in Remuera wanted to modernize the space and make it more versatile for gatherings with family and friends.

To create more privacy and usable space, we cleared the overgrown trees and removed the old stone wall. In their place, we added a screen of slim vertical macrocarpa slats. In front of this, we planted tall clumping bamboo (Slender Weavers), which soften the structure and will grow into a lush green wall over time.

The owners wanted shade from the afternoon sun without losing too much light, so we designed a custom fixed-slat pergola. The slats were built to the exact length needed to span the deck, with spacing that graduates for balance and visual interest. Heating and lighting were added so the space can be enjoyed well into the evening.

We love using custom seating because it’s built to last, fits the space perfectly, and often works out more cost-effective than buying high-quality pieces off the shelf. In this case, the corner seat frees up deck space while being big enough for family gatherings—or an afternoon nap. Plus, custom finishes offer far more colour options than the usual creams, beiges, and greys.
