A Contemporary Courtyard

This small Remuera courtyard had good bones, but it wasn’t pulling its weight. Overgrown planting, a dated stone wall, and limited flexibility meant the space felt closed in rather than inviting. The brief was to modernise the garden and turn it into a versatile outdoor room – somewhere that could comfortably host family and friends, day or night.

BEFORE

After: We started by clearing the space—removing the overgrown trees and demolishing the old stone wall to open things up. In its place, we installed a screen of slim, vertical macrocarpa slats. This created a clean architectural backdrop and instantly modernised the garden.

To soften the structure, we planted tall clumping bamboo (Slender Weavers) in front of the screen. Over time, it will grow into a lush green wall, delivering privacy without heaviness.

For shade, we designed a custom fixed-slat pergola that filters the afternoon sun without plunging the courtyard into darkness. The slats were built to span the deck exactly, with spacing that subtly graduates—adding both balance and visual interest. Integrated heating and lighting mean the space doesn’t shut down when the sun does.

Custom seating was the final piece. Designed specifically for the courtyard, the corner seat maximises usable deck space while comfortably accommodating gatherings—or the occasional afternoon nap. Built to last and finished in a custom colour, it proves that bespoke doesn’t have to mean impractical or predictable.

The result? A refined, flexible courtyard that feels bigger, lighter, and infinitely more usable. Modern, welcoming, and designed to be lived in.
